The Great Way is not difficult
for those who do not pick and choose.

  1. There is a Buddhist scholar who has been working on this scripture for many years who first translated this passage as ,"The Great Way is not difficult for those without preferences." He went back many years later and translated it thus,"The Great Way is not difficult for those not attached to preferences."

  2. Thank you. I got this translation from Daniel Terragno, who told me it is used at Zen Mountain. He said the new translation was deliberately created so that each syllable could be accompanied by a tock from the wooden drum, and that it is quite an experience to join in it. . . . Also, Daniel once spoke to this in a dharma talk, exactly about attachment to our preferences. That has been an important concept to me.
